When I went through OSUT for 11B infantry (Ft. Benning Ga) we were taught that during the daytime it is an OP/LP. Because you primarily observe, and secondarily listen during the daytime. That it is an LP/OP at night, again, because you primarily listen at night and can only secondarily observe at night.
That was back in 1979.
